Hacking the Brother 950i Knitting Machine

How to convert an image into a Brother 950i knitting pattern

Several people (Becky Stern, Steve Conklin and others) have, over the years, developed a Brother disk emulator and python scripts in order to be able to load patterns in to the Brother 930 knitting machine.

The Brother 930 is a USA-only model. I am in the UK, and the nearest equivalent is the Brother 950i. I also wanted to add an 'Aunt Marion'-friendly front-end that would also speed up the process for use demonstrating at Maker Faire.

Steps involved

  1. A Brother 950i knitting machine
  2. An FTDI cable adapted to connect to the 950i
  3. Install the adafruit software and drivers
  4. Install front-end software

Some pictures of things I've made using the software
